A BORROWER’S COMPARISON

Ledn vs Aave. Look at the whole loan.

A retail lending relationship and an onchain protocol solve the liquidity problem in different ways.

Our assessment

Ledn offers a managed Bitcoin loan with a documented lender history. Aave can be a better operational fit for experienced wallet users who want direct access to onchain markets. A meaningful price comparison needs a specified Aave network, reserve and collateral arrangement.

There is no single “Aave loan rate”

Aave borrowing rates respond to reserve utilization and protocol parameters. Borrowing a particular token on one network is not the same quote as borrowing another token elsewhere. A defensible snapshot includes the network, borrowed asset, collateral, mode and observation time.

Ledn publishes amount-based APR tiers for its BTC-backed loan. Those numbers are easier to use as a fixed reference, but they still require jurisdiction and fee checks. We do not fill an Aave row with a stale percentage to create a false apples-to-apples ranking.

Understand the asset you actually pledge

Aave accepts supported tokens within its markets. Native Bitcoin does not become an EVM token simply because a user wants to borrow against it: a Bitcoin exposure may require a supported wrapped representation and its associated arrangements.

Ledn’s BTC-backed loan uses BTC collateral under its custody policy. That substitutes a lender and custody relationship for some of the wallet and protocol workflow. It changes where trust sits; it does not eliminate trust.

Health factor puts operational responsibility on the borrower

Aave asks borrowers to monitor health factor and maintain sufficient collateral. Collateral price changes, interest accrual and parameter changes can affect a position. Network congestion and transaction costs may complicate a top-up when markets move quickly.

A borrower using Ledn also needs liquidity and a collateral plan. Notifications and Auto Top-up are tools rather than guarantees. Automatic transfers require available funds, and liquidation can occur if the loan reaches the applicable threshold.

Operating evidence and onchain visibility

Ledn offers a public record of lending operations and specific reporting programs to examine. Its reported senior ABS-note rating adds information about a particular financing structure, not a promise that a customer cannot lose assets.

Aave offers a different kind of visibility: market data and onchain execution. Open code and visible transactions can support diligence, but borrowers must still evaluate smart-contract, oracle, governance and collateral-token risks. Choose the evidence you can understand and the operational burden you can actually manage.

A practical next step: Request quotes for the same net amount and planned repayment date. Keep collateral value, fee treatment and exit assumptions consistent. Use the cost calculator to explore how an upfront charge changes a short loan.

Common questions

Is Aave cheaper than Ledn?

It can be at a particular time in a particular market, but no universal comparison follows. Include changes in the borrow rate, network costs, token conversion and the cash-out path in a like-for-like cost model.

Does onchain borrowing remove all counterparty risk?

No. It changes the dependencies. Contracts, oracles, collateral-token arrangements, interfaces and network conditions can all matter alongside liquidation risk.
