Three layers: Coinbase, Morpho and the specific market
Coinbase is the interface in this comparison. Morpho is the underlying protocol. The market and product determine the collateral, rate mechanics and liquidation parameters. A statement about Coinbase’s fees is not a statement about every Morpho market.
For BTC-backed borrowing, Coinbase’s product page describes converting BTC to cbBTC and placing it into a Morpho smart contract. That introduces a wrapped-token dependency as well as the protocol and wallet layers.
Rates: distinguish fixed and variable borrowing
Coinbase’s current help center describes both variable-rate and fixed-rate loans. Variable loans have no set maturity; fixed loans have a term and must be repaid by maturity. The documentation says early repayment of a fixed loan does not reduce the interest owed.
A processing fee is charged when borrowing, including additions, and added to principal. A platform fee may also apply. The account-specific quote is therefore the right input for a cost comparison; a protocol dashboard rate alone is incomplete.
Maturity and liquidity can change the decision
Coinbase describes an optional fixed-to-variable conversion before maturity, subject to loan health and available variable-market liquidity. It is not an unconditional extension. A borrower relying on that conversion should keep an alternative repayment plan.
Ledn’s standard structure has a 12-month term. Renewal eligibility and LTV conditions still matter. From January 1, 2027, Ledn’s published guidance requires accrued interest and applicable fees to be cleared at maturity or a mid-term refinance, including for existing loans.
Evidence and support for a managed loan
Ledn’s public reporting, long lending history and defined custody arrangements provide useful due-diligence material for a borrower who wants an institution to work with. Human support cannot stop every liquidation.
Coinbase does provide an interface and account support; it is inaccurate to say its users have “no support.” Support cannot make an onchain protocol risk-free or guarantee a reversal of a smart-contract liquidation. Both routes require collateral monitoring.
A practical next step: Request quotes for the same net amount and planned repayment date. Keep collateral value, fee treatment and exit assumptions consistent. Use the cost calculator to explore how an upfront charge changes a short loan.
