For eligible members using a BTC and USD account. Compare pricing, collateral and the operational differences from Ledn.

Our assessment

Xapo places Bitcoin-backed borrowing inside a membership-based account experience, with a lower maximum starting LTV than many alternatives. Membership and eligibility affect the total cost and access. Crypto collateral is not covered by the deposit guarantee scheme.

A conservative LTV requires more Bitcoin

At 40% LTV, $100,000 of borrowing requires $250,000 of collateral; at 50%, it requires $200,000. This arithmetic illustrates the collateral commitment, not an approval or a guarantee against liquidation.

Membership belongs in the cost decision

The page lists 10.5% interest and no arrangement, setup, closure or liquidation fees. Evaluate the account membership cost separately, especially if opening an account solely to borrow. The cost of joining can matter more for a smaller or shorter loan.

The bank brand does not insure crypto collateral

The disclosures identify Xapo Credit Limited as the loan issuer and Xapo Vasp Limited as the crypto-service provider. They state that crypto deposits are outside the Gibraltar Deposit Guarantee Scheme. Assess the borrowing and custody entities rather than assuming bank branding guarantees Bitcoin.

How we weigh the evidence

Ledn’s operating record and published reports provide due-diligence material, not guarantees. Its reported investment-grade rating applies to senior notes of a specific securitization, not to customer collateral or every Ledn obligation.

Compare dated evidence for the exact product: collateral permissions, funding arrangements, performance during market stress and the borrower’s contractual rights. Different custody and funding models deserve specific analysis rather than a blanket safe-or-unsafe label.

A practical next step: Request quotes for the same net amount and planned repayment date. Keep collateral value, fee treatment and exit assumptions consistent. Use the cost calculator to explore how an upfront charge changes a short loan.

Common questions

Does a 40% starting LTV prevent liquidation?

No. It provides more initial collateral per dollar borrowed, but falling prices, interest and failure to repay can still lead to collateral sales.
